My Daughter's First Day of School
She's slipping out of the backyard of my heart this morning and skipping off down the street to her first day of school. And never again will she be completely mine. Prim and proud she'll wave her young and independent hand this morning and say "Goodbye" and walk with little lady steps to school.
Now she'll learn to stand in lines and wait by the alphabet for her name to be called. She'll learn to tune her ears for the sounds of school bells and she'll learn to giggle and gossip and look at the ceiling in a disinterested way when the little boy across the aisle sticks out his tongue at her. And now she'll learn to be jealous. And now she'll learn how it is to feel hurt inside. And now she'll learn how not to cry.
Now she'll worry about those important things like grades and which dress to wear and whose best friend is whose. And the magic of books and learning will replace the magic of her dolls.
Today when that school bell rings for the first time she'll learn what it means to be a member of the group with all its privileges and its disadvantages too. She'll learn in time that proper young ladies do not laugh out loud or kiss dogs or keep frogs in pickle jars in bedrooms or even watch ants scurry across cracks in sidewalks in the summer.
Today she'll learn for the first time that all who smile at her are not her friends. And I'll stand on the front porch and watch her start out on the long, lonely journey to becoming a woman.
So, world, I bequeath to you today one little girl in a new dress with big blue eyes and a head of light brown hair that bounces in the sunlight when she runs.
I trust you'll treat her well.

long time no post....
Garrison did a lot of bike riding with some boys that he met and was really bummed out that there was a burn ban in effect and we couldn't build a fire for him to play in. Although he did find something else to do to pass the time that he has never really done before....he mastered tree climbing 101 even wearing flip flops.
Of course Charley couldn't let him be the tree climbing expert without having some kind of assistance from her....
Our first stop was Dinosaur Valley State Park where our friends Sam, Lisa, Zach and Emily met us.
Before they got there Matt and Charley carefully mapped out our route...
while Garrison widdled a stick...
This water was C-O-L-D but it didn't phase them.
Zachary and Garrison lookin' tough, Charley and Emily protecting each other from that big dino behind them.
From Dinosaur Valley we went to another campground to visit our friends, the Hawkins and the Davis'. We had an enjoyable evening with them but had to get back to our campground before the gate closed at 10:00 and we were locked out for the night. And trust me, we made it JUST in time. We also went to Fossil Rim Wildlife Park where everyone else decided to visit that very same day. It's a drive thru safari type park where you get to feed the animals from your car. We saw many animals but Charley's favorite were the goats that she got to pet and brush. She tried kissing them and wanted to bring one home with us. Garrison didn't really feel the same way about goats as his sister.
Do you seriously think she stopped? NO.
Do you seriously think that I made her sit and walked away. YES.
Garrison, being the concerned big brother, got her hand and walked with her. It was, at the same time, the funniest thing ever and the sweetest thing ever. He was whispering to her to stop crying and that he would hold her hand and walk with her.

a busy weekend...
Of course we didn't win the cake contest but we had a lot of compliments. My cub scout has now earned his Wolf Badge and is ready to move on to do the things he needs to do to earn his Bear Badge. On Sunday Charley went to see her cousin Paige at her cheerleading competition with Uncle Chip and Grandma Barbie. She had a lot of fun and it made her want to cheer that much more. We took Garrison to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop while Charley was gone, it was pretty funny.
Yesterday morning before church we were still laying in bed and Garrison said he was stronger than me. So I told him "it's on buck-o". We arm wrestled and had thumb wars and he finally told me I was "telligence"'. I said WHAT!? He said "you are telligence and I am telligent". I said what does that mean? He said "telligence means weak and telligent means strong". He's such a goof ball, I have no idea where he comes up with these things.

Happy Birthday Nannie!
Welcome!
Yesterday Charley got in the truck from school and has this bizzare look on her face and said "Mom today we learned about stash Thursday" and said it as if she was questioning it. It was so funny, I immediately knew what she meant and said "you mean Ash Wednesday"? She said "yeah, how do you know?" A friend asked what Charley had given up for Lent and I told her I think she gave up being good at school because she got in trouble for the first time. When I saw her chart had a sad face and said Chaaaarrrrrleeeyyyyy, she turned on the tears and my heart melted. It wasn't just crying, it was screaming sobbing with huge crocodile tears. Yes my four year old already knows how to put on a show. When Garrison found out he was SO relieved that the pressure had been taken off of him and started asking her why she got in trouble and trying to tell her that she shouldn't have been naughty and then in turn said "Garrison it's none of your business". Matt and I just look at each other, laugh quietly and shake our heads.
